Hello Poppy! {PP55}

Happy Paper Players Sunday, friends!  As you read this I am on a Mommy & Me camp-out with my daughter's Girl Scout troop!  Lesley is our Color Challenge hostess with the mostess this week and she has selected a sophisticated and modern color palette:

I will be the first one to say that I am NOT a fan of Poppy Parade but I do LOVE it combined with these colors.  Basic Gray, Cumb Cake and Baja Breeze all on one card?  Be still my heart!  Poppy is just perfect for a little pop of color which is what I do when I'm stumped by a color!

It's a pretty simple design and [I think] doesn't need much explanation but just a few pictures to show you the details.

I stamped Upsy Daisy directly on the Baja Breeze patterned paper and then outlined the flowers with a Baja Breeze marker for added dimension.

The bold and beautiful sentiment from My Friend was inked in Versamark, then Basic Gray ink, sprinkled with clear embossing powder and heat set.  Love that shine, beginning to love that set!

The Crumb Cake border was punched with the Scallop Trim border punch and backed with some Poppy Parade circles made with the Itty Bitty Punch Pack.  These pint-sized circle sure do pack a poppy punch! ;-)

Monochromatic for The Paper Players {PP18}

Happy Sunday everyone!  It's another week for The Paper Players challenge and I am so excited to continue on board as Guest Designer this month!  October finally brings some cooler weather to Florida--and by cooler I mean pleasant [think 84 instead of 94](!)--so that had me thinking of fall colors.  This week's monochromatic challenge at The Paper Players is the perfect opportunity to highlight the SU Neutral color family with Crumb Cake, Early Espresso and Very Vanilla.  

For today's card I used a technique called "emboss resist" or "emerging color" to highlight the designer paper beneath the flowers.  This technique works best with a stamp that has a lot a surface area for the paper to peek through such as the Upsy Daisy set that I've used here.  First, stamp your image onto patterned paper with Versamark ink, sprinkle with clear embossing powder and heat set.  Next, fill a brayer with a coordinating color that is darker than your patterned paper and roll directly over the whole thing--paper & your embossed image.  Keep going!  You want to completely cover your paper and get a deep color.  When it's to your liking, wipe the ink off your embossed image and watch your pattern emerge within your stamped image...such a treat to watch...I know it's the little things that make me happy.  :-)

In keeping with the monochromatic theme, a slice of a Very Vanilla top note peeks out underneath the daises, anchors the image and holds a kind sentiment from the level 2 hostess set, Occasional Quotes.  

 

I wrapped the whole piece with some [retired] Crumb Cake taffeta ribbon and finished it off with another Vintage Brad--love those!  For more inspiration, check out the rest of the Players design team and their fabulous holiday cards.  We hope you'll join us with your monochromatic creations--I can't wait to see what colors you pick!

A color Q sketch 4U

Two new-to-me challenges this week. I've been following the Color Q challenge but just never been able to meet the deadlines! Arielle always has fantastic colors and this week, with Color Q #32, I had to play along so I could pay homage to one of my favorite SU colors, ever--Kiwi Kiss! I sure wish it was returning with Baja Breeze but alas... Anyway, this week's Color Q called for Kiwi Kiss, Groovy Guava (love), Basic Black, Very Vanilla and Kraft (love, love). Here we go:

I really love the way this turned out using another all-time favorite, Upsy Daisy for the focal image. I inked it once in Groovy Guava, stamped off, inked again and stamped full strength slightly off from the first. This way it looks like a field of daisies! And, for this great sketch at 2S4Y, Two Sketches For You #52, I really wanted to try and make a paper ruffle border.



I used the same technique as for the distressed flower found in this post but applied the distressing to three strips of kiwi kiss trimmed with the scallop border punch. I am pleased with the results. It's not often that what I have in my head comes out exactly as I wanted on paper--tee, hee!


Several friends have birthdays this month, so the inside of this card was finished off with a birthday wish. I inked the sentiment from Great Friend in kiwi kiss and then went over just the word 'friend' with my basic black stampin' write marker before stamping it on my paper. The HB sentiment is part of a larger stamp from All Holidays and, again, I just inked the HB part with my black marker. I hope you like it. I'm so exited to participate in the first Pals Paper Arts challenge! I've been a long-time reader of Mary Fish's blog (who hasn't?!) and am looking forward to great things from the design team of her downlines. This card meets the PPA Challenge #1, PPA1, using a slight variation on layout #52 (FTL52) from the Clean and Simple blog (another favorite). Here I started with a sahara sand base cut to 5 1/2 x 8 1/2" folded at the top. The thoroughly modern dsp provides a beautiful panel of bermuda bay pattern set off by soft suede scalloped edges. Since I didn't have any of the rose red ink that coordinates with the thoroughly modern dsp, I substituted the "in color" melon mambo on the biggest flower from the "petal pizzazz" set. I cut it out and added a little oomph with a flower burst embosslit, an SU exclusive, that had been brayered with melon mambo before running through my cuttlebug. To tie the flower in with the other two colors, I punched out a 3/4" circle of bermuda bay and topped it off with a 1/2" circle of the soft suede pattern from thoroughly modern dsp then popped it up on stampin' dimensionals. The sentiment from "upsy daisy" was inked up with my melon mambo and bermuda bay stampin' write markers and stamped on whisper white cs. Don't you just love having the in color markers?! Lastly, it's punched out with the new modern label punch and tucked it under the flower. What do you think?
edited to add: Oops! I just realized that I used soft suede instead of the challenge color--chocolate chip! I think I intended to use one of the thoroughly modern patterns that included soft suede so there was, apparently, no getting me off the soft suede train. Sorry about that!
